October 24, 2019

Dental problem is a serious problem occurring among the preschoolers. According to a recent study by KANTAR IMRB for Colgate-Palmolive (India) Limited revealed that almost 8 out of 10 children in India are affected by dental problems which need immediate action.  As per research, one out of 10 two – years old already have 1 or more cavities, by age three, 28 % of children have 2 or more cavities and by age five nearly 50% of children have one or more cavities.  Many guardians presume that cavities (also known as caries or tooth decay) in child teeth don’t make a difference since they will be lost in any case. However that is not valid, since cavities can adversely influence lasting teeth and lead to future dental problems.

As per the survey done, 8 out of 10 parents believed that their children dental condition is good and no treatment is required. But as per dental examination it is being found that almost 80% of those children are actually suffering from oral health problems and require immediate treatment. Thus a huge difference is there in between the actual dental condition of children and the condition of their oral health as believed by their parents. This difference between parents perception and reality is most prominent in Kolkata (92%) followed by Mumbai (88%) and Hyderabad (80%).

Plaque accumulation, white spots on teeth, cavities, bad breath, gum bleeding and gum inflammation are some of the major oral health problems found in children.

Milk teeth in a child should be taken proper care of, since these teeth in a child helps in chewing nutritious food while encouraging adequate development of the jaws.

Making children aware of good dental habits:

Being a parent make your child aware of brushing his teeth 2 times a day with a child brush which has soft bristles. Make it a regular habit for your child and keep an eye that the brush removes all the plaque, sticky, bacteria- containing deposits that accumulate on the teeth, causing tooth decay. Also keep on noticing that whether there are any brown or white spots which might be signs of early decay. Now days there are brushes intended to address the various needs of kids at all ages, guaranteeing that you can choose a toothbrush that is proper for your kid.

When your child is of age 3, you can begin utilizing a pea-size measure of fluoride toothpaste which helps in preventing cavities to occur. There are many flavors, in case your child does not like the flavor, go for the flavor which your child prefers. Make sure your child doesn’t swallow the toothpaste which is very common among children, since swallowing too much of fluoride toothpaste can be the result of white or brown spots on your child’s adult teeth.

Make sure your child clean each tooth thoroughly, top and bottom, inside and out. Being a child it is not possible to brush his teeth alone until he is about 6 to 8 years old. So being a guardian you always need to look after while your child is brushing since they have a habit of brushing the front teeth that he can see only.

Consult with a Pediatrician:

It is necessary to consult a Pediatrician for your child at least once in 3 months to ensure your child’s health is going good. The Specialist will check your child’s teeth and gums, and in case she found any problem, she may refer you to Pediatric Dentist for further check up.
